We do not have gluten on site in our production kitchen, however we cannot completely guarantee that items have not been contaminated prior to arriving at H&T (e.g a spice may contain traces of an allergen due to its manufacturing line).
Food labels show if a food item is dairy free (DF), Vegetarian or Vegan.
HOW MANY DOES A MEAL FEED?
Our meals are designed to be built by you, each $16 meat and $8 side pack feeds two people, so you can feed you and a friend for around $31 (that's one meat and 2 sides). If you're opting for the smaller size, this is a single person portion, so if you want something different to what everyone else is having or are stocking up the fridge / freezer for those 'can't be bothered cooking for one' kind of night, that's easy too!
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO RECEIVE MY ORDER?
All orders are sent on an overnight delivery with NZ Post. Orders placed Mon-Thurs will be dispatched the following day. Fri, Sat, Sun orders will be dispatched Monday.
DO YOU CATER TO SPECIFIC DIETARY REQUIREMENTS?
Gluten Free - Everything we produce is gluten free - we have absolutely no gluten at any of our sites.
Vegetarian - We have a number of vege options, just use the search function to sort by 'vegetarian' options.
Vegan - We have a number of vegan options, just use the search function to sort by 'vegan' options.
Dairy Free - We have a variety of dairy free options too. Simply use the search function to sort by 'dairy free' options.
At Hammer & Tongs we pride ourselves on providing a hearty, nutritious, tasty meal that is ready to go. We focus on local, ethical and seasonal ingredients and eliminate anything that is not required (colourings, flavourings, additives, thickeners, sugars, sulphites etc). We do not rely on flavour boosters, instead we opt for fresher flavours using herbs and spices, traditional recipes and longer cooking times to increase flavour and nutrition.
We prepare fresh meals daily in our Rosedale kitchen and cook using local and seasonal ingredients where possible. All of our chicken, eggs, pork and bacon is free range (as it should be) and we believe in eating nose to tail for health, ethical and environmental reasons.
We are very conscious of our effect on the environment and do our utmost to reduce our impact. Our in store containers are compostable (not just recyclable) and are oven, microwave, fridge & freezer safe.
Food to be sold online and via our retail fridge & freezer in store mostly come in vacuum sealed bags. This preserves both the quality of our food as well as the shelf life and also prevents any spills in transit. We are working to find a more eco friendly alternative and will keep you posted on this.
We also use a compostable wool insulation product to deliver your meals to you, while keeping them safe. Please re-use the box, insulation & gel ice packs, or return them to us on your next visit.
HOW DO I HEAT MY HAMMER & TONGS MEALS?
It's up to you, some people like the convenience of the microwave while others are happy to wait a little longer and pop it in the oven.
Our biocane containers are compostable and are oven, microwave, fridge & freezer safe (excluding PET /clear lid). You can heat directly in these containers, just remove any clear lids first.
You can heat your Hammer & Tongs meals in their biocane containers in the microwave. Simply remove any clear lid and heat through until piping hot. We cannot tell you exactly how long to heat as it depends on your microwave’s power. As a guide, we recommend you microwave on high for 2-4 minutes, stirring every minute or so. If frozen, add an additional 1-2 minutes. Please remove items that arrive in a vacuum sealed bag and put them in a microwave safe dish before heating.
Oven for Vacuum Sealed Bags (Slow Cook, No Mess):
If your food has come in a vacuum sealed bag, you can pop it straight into your oven on a low heat of 80C. Allow half an hour (or until piping hot). The bags are food grade and are designed to be heated to these temperatures.
Oven for Biocane Containers & Tins:
Preheat oven to 180 degrees celsius.
Tins can go straight in the oven; just remove the cardboard lid first.
Place food in biocane container or tin into the oven for 10-20mins or until piping hot. If the meal is frozen, defrost prior to heating.
Please be careful when removing items from the oven or microwave.
All food should only be reheated once and it should be reheated to a minimum internal temperature of 75 degrees celcius. For an accurate reading, use a probe thermometer. If the meal has not reached an internal temperature of 75 degrees celsius after following the instructions, continue to cook until it is appropriately heated. If in doubt, heat until piping hot.
FRESH OR FROZEN?
This is up to you - some people prefer their items chilled and ready to heat & eat straight away while others like to have a supply in their freezer for those unexpected moments. If you do choose to purchase a frozen meal online, there is some possibility it may defrost in transit as the chill pads keep items chilled but not frozen. It's best to eat these items within 3 days.
CAN I FREEZE MY HAMMER & TONGS MEALS?
Absolutely. Most of our meals are great to keep in the freezer - all the meats, lasagnes, curries, soups & starchy vegetable items freeze really well. Perfect for a meal in a hurry or for those unexpected guests!!

Yes! To ensure freshness of your product, place an online order place for pick up the following day (same day pick up is available if collecting from Silverdale). Select 'pick up' from either Silverdale or Rosedale in shipping method and skip the shipping costs!

HOW MUCH IS DELIVERY?
This depends on how much you order. We will update this page once we have more information from our couriers. Orders over $150 are free!
DO I NEED TO BE AT HOME TO RECEIVE MY DELIVERY?
The simple answer is no you do not need to be home to receive your delivery. Our products are delivered in a cardboard box that is fully insulated with an environmentally friendly wool liner and gel ice packs. These can keep your food safe for up to 24 hours (from time of packing).
However, we recommend you get your items delivered to wherever you will be as this timeframe is weather dependent and will decrease in warmer weather.
Please refrigerate your items as soon as possible.
CAN I GET HAMMER & TONGS DELIVERED TO MY HOLIDAY DESTINATION?
Absolutely! And we highly recommend this - who needs to be cooking on holiday?!! Simply change your delivery address at checkout & add any special delivery instructions that may be required. It's a great idea to get Hammer & Tongs delivered to the snow, beach, bach or boat!!
HOW DO I RECYCLE MY DELIVERY BOX & ICE PACK?
A return label will be included in your delivery. Simply stick this to the outside of your empty box and call the 0800 number on the box or leave it out on your next delivery day.
Alternatively, refreeze the gel ice packs and pack up the box with food to take on your next adventure!
